Kingwood boys’ soccer coach Kevin Johnson went into Friday’s match against cross-town rival Humble looking to achieve a milestone victory.
Johnson, in his 20th year at the Mustangs’ helm, had 499 wins to his credit as a boys’ soccer coach. The 2-1 victory against Humble put him at 500. The native New Yorker entered the season ranked second all-time in the state for victories as a boys’ soccer coach and 40th all-time in the nation.
In 29 years of coaching, Johnson has recorded a total of 592 victories, including his years as a girls’ soccer coach.
He is the only coach in the state to have taken both boys’ and girls’ soccer teams to the state tournament. In 1995, he coached the Kingwood Lady Mustangs to the state championship, compiling a perfect 29-0 season.
Johnson led the Kingwood boys’ team to the state finals in 1999, 2001 and 2005 and is a two-time finalist for National Coach of the Year.
