Kingwood boys' soccer team improved their district record to 9-1 to stay on top of District 19-5A. The team helped head coach Kevin Johnson celebrate his 500th victory as a high school soccer coach.
In his twentieth season of coaching high school soccer, Johnson, the second winningest coach in state history, looked on as junior midfielder Matt Hester evaded a defender and delivered a blast from the 20-yard line that ended a 1-1 tie as Kingwood upended Humble for the 2-1 victory in the final minute of the game.
A senior night crowd filled the stands and watched as the two teams played a scoreless first half. The Mustangs struck first in the second half as senior midfilder Jon Bergeron found the back of the net fourteem minutes into the half.
Within minutes, Humble tied the score on a 30-yard shot from an open space in the midfield to beat the Kingwood keeper, tying the score just six minutes before Hester delivered the game winner in the final minutes.
The following day, Kingwood traveled to Nimitz, hoping to keep the momentum going from the Humble victory. Playing to a scoreless tie with Nimitz for almost sixty four minutes of play, Kingwood exploded for three goals in the final sixteen minutes of the match.
The first came on a free kick from the left side by senior forward Vinnie Martinelli, who found a leaping senior midfielder Michael Micheletti heading in his seventh goal of the season.
Minutes later, senior midfielder Ty Berilgen manufactured a second goal by beating the Nimitz defender and lofting in a perfectly placed ball while evading the charging Nimitz keeper.
The final goal of the contest came as senior forward Ross Orlando scored on a ball delivered by Jordan Nichols, a sophomore playing in his first varsity game.
The defense turned in another strong effort, led by seniors Matt Berens and Michael Schwarz. Goal keepers Dusty Pate and Brandon Davis contributed to another shutout for the Mustangs with the 3-0 victory.
