KHS and KPHS soccer ready for playoffs

The nation’s top-ranked girls’ high school soccer team opened the 2009 playoffs Tuesday. The District 19-5A champion Kingwood Lady Mustangs took on Milby. at Barnett Stadium. Milby finished fourth in District 20-5A.
The Lady Mustangs finished the regular season 26-0, winning their final 10 matches by a combined score of 70-0. They outscored their opponents 143-9 for the season. Kaisa Marshall, Amanda Essay and Amanda Kim were among the team’s leading goal scorers for the season. Dallas Brown and Clare Jukabowski were also among the leaders on offense this season.
The District 19-5A champion Kingwood Mustangs boys’ soccer team opened playoffs on the same day, taking on Bellaire at Thorne Stadium beginning. The Mustangs closed the regular season on a 10-game win streak, including a thrilling 2-1 victory over Atascocita to clinch the league title. Kingwood scored two goals in the final four minutes of play to win it. Spencer Hutchins and Michael Micheletti provided the heart stopping goals. Dusty Pate got the victory goal.
The victory improved Kingwood to 16-3-3 overall and 11-1 in district play. The Mustangs finished ahead of second-place MacArthur (10-1-1). Head coach Kevin Johnson enters the playoffs with 502 career boys’ soccer wins.
Kingwood rolled to a 10-0 win over Eisenhower in the District 19-5A baseball opener last week. The Mustangs host Nimitz Saturday, March, 28, for a 7 p.m. district game.
The Lady Mustangs swept a District 19-5A softball doubleheader early last week to improve to 11-9 overall and a district-leading 3-0. Kingwood blanked Humble 15-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Alley Morris (six strikeouts) before turning away MacArthur 2-1 with Debi Risenhoover earning the win.
Both Kingwood Park boys’ and girls’ soccer teams entered the playoffs over the weekend with Texas City providing the opposition in both matches.
The District 41-4A champion Lady Panthers completed the regular season 15-3-3 overall and 10-0-2 in district play. Brooke Harper scored all four goals in a 4-0 victory over Atascocita in a playoff tune-up match early last week. Jamie Luis, Kacie Black, Kristi Murphy and Katlynn Boucher all provided assists.
The Panthers boys’ team entered the playoffs as District 41-4A runner-up with a record of 12-6-7 overall and 8-2-2 in league play. Cody Lofgren, Garrett Phillips and Zack Gibson scored goals in a 3-1 victory over Caney Creek in the regular season finale.
Austin Salter struck out 11 in Kingwood Park’s 7-3 win over Dayton in last week’s District 19-4A baseball opener.
The Kingwood Park Lady Panthers softball team dropped a 6-0 decision to Dayton but look to rebound at Crosby on Friday, March 27, in a 6 p.m. District 19-4A game.
