Crabb announces political retirement

District 127 State Rep. Joe Crabb will not seek re-election. He held his seat in the Texas House of Representatives for 18 years, but plans to leave office when his term expires in January 2011. His announcement came during a brief speech at the Crosby Alumni Association dinner.

“It has been 18 exciting years,” said Crabb.

Crabb spent 49 years working as a Methodist preacher and served in the military reserves for 26. He moved to the Crosby, where he attended public schools, near the end of WWII.

Crabb said he spent his life in District 127, with connections to Highlands, Crosby, Huffman, Atascocita, Huffman and Kingwood. His wife worked for Humble ISD. In his later years, Crabb served as pastor of Lake Houston United Methodist Church in Huffman.

“It’s time to move on to the next years, which will include some fill-in for some pastor friends, some business ventures and much more time with family.”

Several names are surfacing as possible candidates to fill the vacancy. A primary election will be held in March 2010, and a general election November 2010.

Local physician Dr. Martin Basaldua will be in the race Humble ISD school board member Dan Huberty has officially announced his candidacy.

“Representative Crabb has been a faithful representative for the people of District 127,” Huberty said. “I want to thank Joe and Nancy for giving so many years of their lives in service to the people of Texas and especially northeast Harris County.” Huberty currently serves as Humble ISD School Board president. He was elected to office in May 2006, and ran unopposed in May 2009.While on the board, he served as chairman of the Finance Committee.

Huberty will seek the Republican nomination. He said he is beginning to visit with the community and is receiving encouragement and support from friends and neighbors already.
