An Humble car dealership has purchased the naming rights to the Home Plaza of Humble ISD's Turner Stadium for $100,000.
In a five-year deal, Humble's Texan GMC-Buick purchased the naming rights to the Home Plaza at Humble ISD's Turner Stadium. This sponsorship is the first of its kind in Texas, says Dr. Guy Sconzo, superintendent of Humble ISD.
At a press conference held Jan. 5, Operating Manager Bert Brocker of Texan GMC-Buick was joined by Humble ISD co-athletic directors Troy Kite and Krista Malmstrom at the newly renovated Turner Stadium.
"We thank Texan GMC Buick for their support. This is, what we believe, the first ever, anywhere, of a business sponsoring a high school entry naming," said Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo."And with the current fiscal situation in public education, this could not have happened at a more needy time."
Humble ISD is joined by nearly all the school districts in Texas in a financial fight. Districts across the state are facing multimillion deficits. The Texas Legislature is expected to address the crisis during the upcoming session, but lawmakers have not been forthcoming with any specific remedies.
In Humble ISD, local businessman Bert Brocker has stepped forward to help. In addition to sponsoring the Humble ISD Rodeo this February, he is buying the naming rights for the Turner Home Entryway.
Kite welcomed administrators and community members to see the new sign over the home entry.
“We have had a complete makeover of Turner over the last 12 months. We have worked hard to create a family atmosphere and find partners who believe as we do, that athletic events, like the ones we have at Turner, offer a great family atmosphere.
“Bert has been out here this past football season, meeting the fans and we have had tons of compliments about his participation,” Kite said.
The impressive facility, renovated with funds paid for with voter-approved bonds, will now hold more than 10,000 fans and can host the press, scouts, coaches, announcers and special guests in the press box in style, from large screen TVs to tabletop computer connections and much more. The stadium will also host the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics Track and Field event in 2012, expected to draw 10,000 athletes.
The team at Texan GMC-Buick is excited about the events to come, as well as the start of the next football season. "We are proud to be part of this stadium and to be partners with Humble ISD," said Bert Brocker, "head coach" and operating manager at Texan. "The bottom line for us at Texan is this is our neighborhood and our community and we are proud of it."
Sconzo said, “What incredible support from Texan GMC this is. This money is the equivalent to two teachers' annual salaries. We thank Steep Creek Media, too, for aggressively seeking as much revenue as possible to help keep us from cutting any more than is necessary. Involvement in athletics, in the arts, in all extra curricular activities, is critically important to education. We thank you, Bert.”
Steep Creek Media represented Humble ISD in the agreement.
