Biography:

David Dickson writes Life is a Cabernet, a column about enjoying wine (and life). Now an experienced oenophile, David likes to tell the story of how he got into wine. "I drank a lot of Mateus Rose, Liebfraumilch and Lambrusco before I got serious about wine. At the time, that's what most Americans thought wine was. We won't go into how many years it has been, but I clearly remember my first trip to a real wine store. I stood and stared at a wall of French wine. I did not have a clue! Eventually I selected a bottle based solely on its sophisticated-looking label. After all, I didn't want the clerk to think I didn't know what I was doing. I repeated that process five or six times before finding a bottle that I could honestly say I liked. My first attempt ordering wine at a restaurant was equally humiliating. The wine list might as well have been in Greek."

David has come a long way since then, but this experience is the inspiration for his column. "I don't think you should have to be a wine wizard to enjoy wine. I'm hoping Life is a Cabernet will take some of the mystery out of the subject and make it easier for the casual wine drinker to enjoy good wine." As an adjunct to his column, David also has a web site, www.lifeisacabernet.net , with the same 'enjoy wine and life' philosophy.

David is heavily involved with the community. He is or has been chairman of the board of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District Foundation, FamilyTime Foundation, and Village Learning & Achievement Center. He also serves as a trustee of Holy Trinity Episcopal School, and is helping the Humble Independent School District Education Foundation raise funds for an observatory. David teaches basic computing skills to senior citizens through the Academy for Life Long Learning, a program of Kingwood College, and several times a year teaches an introductory wine course through the college. Watch his column and web site for information about the next wine course.

David has spent his professional career in information technology. He currently has a consulting practice that provides information technology management consulting to small and medium-sized businesses. David's wife is Pam Dickson who writes Out and About and who shares his love of food and wine.
