The Humble ISD School Board has approved a pay raise for district police officers. The raises takes effect July 1.

The upgraded salary scale is intended to attract and retain highly qualified school district police officers. Police will be receiving raises of an average of 10%. This includes security guards, dispatchers, police officers, senior police officers, corporals and sergeants. Entry level salary for Humble ISD police officers will be $50,000 beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Officers can also receive additional pay for various items such as Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certificates achieved above basic level, field training, instructor pay, mental health and bilingual.

“Our officers are uniquely trained to support students and staff in educational settings and we want to attract and retain the best,” Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen said.

Humble ISD also plans to grow its force by two more officers for the 2019-2020 school year as well as add one dispatcher. The police pay raises are part of an overall initiative in Humble ISD. It is the district’s goal to provide raises for teachers and other staff with amounts to be determined this month.

“We appreciate State Rep. Dan Huberty, State Sen. Brandon Creighton, and the Texas Legislature for their commitment to public education,” Fagen said.

The Texas Legislature passed new school finance legislation on May 25 and district officials are analyzing how the 308-page House Bill 3 will affect the district’s budget.

“The salary upgrade makes police jobs in Humble ISD more competitive with similar police jobs in the Houston area,” Police Chief Solomon Cook said. “This is so exciting, because Humble ISD is such a great place to serve and protect. It’s like taking care of an extended family.”

The Humble ISD Police Department has more than 30 fleet units and more than 70 employees, including police officers, security officers and dispatchers. Police job positions include patrol, bike patrol, campus officers, emergency response and investigation. Other positions include community services, communications, records, truancy, safe and secure schools and training.

In addition, the department is one of only six Texas school police departments that have been authorized by TCOLE as a state training provider. This past year Humble ISD Police offered 83 training courses. One of the many topics of training was Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT). This training is designed to prepare the first responder to isolate, distract and neutralize an active shooter.

“This training covers nationwide best practices,” Cook said. “It addresses current issues dealing with social media and other societal topics. Most of the FBI LEEDA training in the Houston area is conducted in our police department.”

“We have one mission, to protect our students and our staff. That is our sole focus, what drives us,” Cook said. “We protect, we serve and we care. Many of our officers have children in Humble ISD schools and some of our officers are graduates of Humble ISD.”
