Deputy Chris Gaines with Constable Mark Herman's office was honored with the " Star of Texas Award" by Governor Greg Abbott at the State Capital in Austin, Texas. This award is presented to Texas peace officers and first responders who were critically injured or killed in the line of duty.

In 2018, Deputy Gaines responded to a call for service pertaining to an individual who was threatening to harm himself. He arrived on scene with other deputies and attempted to make contact with the male who was inside the home.

After several attempts to make contact, Deputy Gaines returned to his patrol vehicle to confirm the address and obtain additional information. At that time the male exited the residence and began shooting at the deputies.

Deputy Gaines was struck in his lower extremities by the gunfire from the suspect. He underwent numerous surgeries and physical therapy over the course of several months and has returned to duty and continues to serve and protect the citizens of Precinct 4.

Thank you Deputy Gaines for your bravery, courage, and strength!
