Congratulations to Thomas McGuffey, Kingwood High School senior, who was awarded the title of Leader of Tomorrow by the Humble Intercontinental Rotary. Thomas, who is the Executive Officer and Color Guard Commander of NJROTC, Eagle Scout and Honor Roll student will be attending the University of Houston Honors College with an ROTC scholarship. He will majoring in mechanical engineering. I see a very bright future for this incredible young man. We’re going to miss you, Dwayne Ulrich! The Houston Police Department peace officer we all know and love is officially retired from the force. Officer Daniel von Quintuus is taking over his role of HPD’s Kingwood Community Services representative. Accompanied by his wife, Cathy Summers, Dwayne enjoyed cake and many, many stories of his 19 years in Kingwood, with Dee Price, Norma O’Donnell, HPD Kingwood Division Capt. Mark Fougerousse, Barbara Cunningham, Hilda Healey and other Kingwood residents who came to wish him well. Don’t be a stranger, Dwayne!
It was truly a fabulous Great Gatsby-inspired night that Louis Flory of Effex and Gabi Stephens hosted at the beautiful Flory residence. Despite the rain, which thankfully let up right before the party started, guests seemed to have such a wonderful time, taking fun pictures at the photo booth before meandering over a little bridge to the tented back lawn where drinks were served at the bar before cutting a rug on the dance floor, accompanied by live music from the band and an amazing Liza Minelli impersonator. Louis and Gabi gave every detail amazing attention from the valet service to the door attendants, the Charleston-dancing girls, the complimentary “umbrella service” during bouts of drizzle and the spectacular fireworks display. Capping off the evening was Louis’s generous donation of $15,000 each to HAAM (Humble Area Assistance Ministries) and The Mission Northeast. Enjoying the evening were Wayne and Millie Garrison, Darryal and Connie Chandler, Daniel Ledoux, Terry and Mitzi Vaughn, Tony and Leslie Raffa, Chad and Devon Alexander and Tiffany Stafford.
You would be surprised at how hard the Friends of the Library Kingwood work to raise funds for our local library – over $91,000 in 2015 alone. They have just installed their new board of directors and officers who are already deep into continuing their amazing work. Congratulations to these amazing hard workers – Carolyn Humphrey, Connie Yaeger, Roger Whitney, Chuck Dugand, Karen Buchler, Racquel Henry, Emily Maas, Betsy Bikett, Chris Davis, Marianne Lincoln, Richard LaFosse, Tricia Sveda and Becky Jinette.
The Kingwood Women’s Club is a tireless force of good. With almost 14,000 volunteer hours and over $100,000 raised in the last year, Claudette McKee installed this year’s new officers: Debbis Spears, Lu Ann Schmidt, Clotile Berlin, Bobbie Wells, Lynn Walters, Donna Wiener, Ellie Csengery, Rosemary DeMarco and Gwen Carter. Membership awards were also presented to Latreca Black, Denise Coleman and Linda Hernandez. Congratulations on a very successful philanthropic year, ladies!
