Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? The Academy for Lifelong Learning at Kingwood College offers a vast schedule of courses for those 55 and older. The best part is that a membership in the ALL program costs only $10 for the entire year. Once a member, most of the classes are free, with the exception of a few that have minimal fees for materials. The courses offered in May include eBay Seller Basics, Getting to Know the Internet, Make a Blue Bonnet Tote Bag, Chayon-Ryu/Tai Chi Class, Internet Resources for Genealogy Research, Buddy Holly and the Day the Music Died, The Ethics of Terrorism, Life is a Cabernet – an Introduction to Wine, Prescription Errors and the Elderly, and many more. Classes are taught by various volunteers throughout the community and this May, eight classes will be taught by Kingwood College faculty or staff. In addition to courses, the program also takes seniors on monthly outings. They will take two tours of the new R. B. Tullis Library in May. The library is located off U.S. Highway 59 next to the East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) building. “We have three trips scheduled: our famous “Tunnel Tour” (of the downtown tunnels) and two trips using Harris County Precinct 4 buses – one to Navasota/Brenham and the other to the Weather Museum in Houston,” said Pat Chandler, the college's program manager. Other perks that come with an ALL membership include free aerobics classes at the college's fitness center, a monthly pot luck lunch and a game day every Friday. Most classes are held at the EMCID Complex, the college's off-site center, which is just a few minutes north of Kingwood Drive in New Caney. Chandler said that enrollment has been steadily increasing. “We have over 700 (members) right now and we were at 550 last year,” said Chandler. Classes will not be held in June or July, except for knitting a crocheting. A full schedule, including more new classes will be set to begin in August. There are also no classes in December. “In August, anybody can take a class and they don't have to be a member,” said Chandler. The calendar year for membership runs from September 1 through August 31. “We've got our biggest and best schedule yet,” said Chandler. For more information, call 281-312-1750 or 281-312-1749.
