This week My Cute Little German Mother reaffirmed her vow to try anything once. She’s said this many times, but I haven’t seen her prove it for a while. I remember one time while my sisters and I were doing headstands, we dared her to give it a try. She put a little pillow under her head and proceeded to fling her legs up over her head and against the closet door. She fell almost immediately, with a series of pops and shrieks, and one other thing that I can’t mention but we still laugh about today – but she did it. Another time, my sisters and I dared her to drive while making this funny face she used to do. It’s a bit hard to describe, but her face was contorted and her front teeth swallowed up her bottom lip. She did it. And then we were embarrassed because she wouldn’t stop. Now, we never had the desire (or maybe it was the opportunity) to ask her to try anything dangerous. But I think she would have gone for it if we had. From what her sister, one year younger, says, Mom has always been a daredevil. My aunt says that she used to tearfully beg her not to try things, and she would always do them anyway. She once jumped from the top of her family’s barn with an umbrella. It broke, of course, but she did not. The other day, I came home from work and my kids couldn’t wait to show me a cell phone video of their Oma being tased. Now, before you get ready to call the Grandparents Protective Services, you should know that it wasn’t a real taser. But I’m not sure she knew that or cared. My son came home with this little stun gun and had been begging someone to test it out. No one volunteered. But the next day My Cute Little German Mother asked, “Vhere is dat sing? You can try it on me.” Now the kids say that they protested at first, but then gave in ... I’m not so sure. So, there’s a video of her, my son quickly touching the thing to her leg as she yelps, “Owww! Dat stings! That’s followed by laughter from all, including her. You should also know that these kids I speak of are 23 and 20 years old. My youngest wasn’t there but would have enthusiastically joined in if he had been. If it makes it to YouTube, I’ll let you know. It would surely be a hit. Yes, the mischief in bad taste often flows freely at my house ... and my Little Cutie initiates it as often as she can. I think she certainly owes them one now. And rest assured, she’ll get ‘em. That day, after looking at the video, I went to check on her and see how she was doing. “Vell,” she said, “it stung but it vas kind of funny. I told you I vill try anysing once.” I suggested that, at her age, perhaps we should keep the stunts to a minimum.
