The Atascocita High School (AHS) Lady Eagles swept to take the state title in softball in Austin June 2. The team came in as the underdog to win over large schools like Katy as they rounded out the season.

The team had a rough start to their season but came out on top. On June 5 at 7 p.m., AHS Lady Eagles Coach Ashley Boyd and school officials gave fans, family and the community a chance to celebrate on the school’s “Jimbo Field.”

Local government officials came or sent representatives to congratulate the girls personally for this historic win by presenting certificates of achievement and the state trophy.

Humble Mayor pro tem Norman Funderburk addressed the crowd and thanked the ladies on behalf of the city for bringing home a win that is the first of its kind for the school. He specifically addressed the positive direction of Boyd: “This team would not have had this level of success without the thoughtful leadership of Coach Ashley Boyd,” he said.

Funderburk continued his presentation by speaking directly to the young women of the team by saying, “Each one of you achieved this success together and displayed a high level of character – not only on the field but also in life.”

Funderburk concluded by dedicating this day in honor of the Lady Eagles’ State Championship win for their determination and work ethic as an example throughout the community.

Afterward, Humble Girls Softball League President Hector Balboa spoke to the team from the press box, thanking the Lady Eagles.

“Many of these team players on the field today have supported HGSL in their younger years. Some played at Lindsay Lyons Park for a decade as they prepared themselves for this day,” he said.

“The team has a new title, ‘The UIL State Champions – Your Lady Eagles,’” added Balboa. “These ladies did not just step onto the field and share success, they made success happen and worked successfully together to achieve such an honor.”

At the end of the ceremony, the crowd cheered, the team members were presented with certificates, and their coach spoke on the girls’ behalf. “I want to see way more of this in the future. These girls came up from behind and came out as winners this past Saturday, 5-3 over Comal Canyon,” Boyd said.

After all the presentations, the girls gathered for group photos with the trophy, awards and signs. Fans, family and friends came and took their own photos to capture this historical moment for not only the Lady Eagles, but for Atascocita High School and the City of Humble as well.

Even after the celebration on the field, the team continued to celebrate with food and cheers. This is sure to be an event for the history books as these ladies set the stage for other current and future athletic and academic teams of this campus.
