Birthday boat becomes rescue vessel

Braden Hassel's parents went back and forth about buying him a johnboat for his birthday. Their son loves to fish, but like most parents, they deliberated over the expense, whether he was too young, and whether he would use the boat often enough.
Ultimately, they decided to do it and surprised him with the new boat as his gift.

Kingwood churches to the rescue

St. Martha Catholic Church on Woodland Hills Drive in Kingwood ended up as a makeshift shelter for about 100 people last Tuesday night, Aug. 29. Tom Gallagher, the grand knight for the Knights of Columbus, coordinated the effort.

"We actually were not even supposed to be a shelter but residents of the local Arbor Terrace retirement community really needed us," he said.

St. Martha closes as temporary shelter

St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood ended up being a makeshift shelter for about 100 people on Tuesday, Aug. 29.  Hurricane Harvey brought nearly 35 inches of rain to the area, resulting in a flash flood. Many people had to seek refuge. 
Tom Gallagher, the Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus, coordinated the effort.

Relief hampered by volunteer vehicles

Hundreds of volunteers have spread over in the community ravaged by last week's Hurricane Harvey, arriving in neighborhoods with shovels, axes and mops in hand. And they are driving pick up trucks, flat bed trailers and every sort of personal vehicle, packing streets in affected neighborhoods.

But the horde of Sheetrock removers, sweepers, food providers, errand runners and comforters are preventing debris removal.

Kingwood HS students will relocate to Summer Creek HS

Students at Kingwood High School will not have classes at their home campus this year. They will go to school at Summer Creek High School for the 2017-18 year. Hurricane Harvey brought a ravaging storm to the community, dumping between three and four feet in the area. Kingwood High School was flooded.

Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, superintendent, said in the face of the "indescribable destruction," district officials met to discuss all conceivable options. They focused on three thoughts:  keep the Kingwood High School tradition, keep the student body together and come up with an option that allowed for fine arts, athletic and extra curricular activities to continue.

City of Humble files Declaration of Disaster

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on August, 27, 2017, Mayor Aaron executed a Declaration of Disaster for the City of Humble.   This action activates the City's Emergency Management Plan.  At this time no evacuation orders have been given.  We are monitoring this event very closely and will relay any new information to you as necessary.
