Trey Guidry and Malcolm Dishongh are pleased with the street improvements on First Street in Humble except for one “small” thing – those newly-poured cement medians that prevent east- and west-bound drivers from turning left into their favorite businesses.

The filing period for the four open positions for the Humble ISD Board of Trustees ends on Feb. 17. Four of the seven school board positions – positions 1, 3, 4 and 5 – are up for re-election in May. As of Jan. 31, four people have formally filed to run.

Ten years ago, Kingwood residents Cynthia and Larry Shiflet decided to start a new venture – a community newspaper. The goal was to start a fresh, all-local paper with local news, local columnists and hyper-local coverage of issues, served up with a heart for offering free advertising to nonprofits.

The Huffman school board passed a resolution of concern at the January meeting regarding the requirement by the Texas Legislature for the Commission of Education to implement a public-school rating system that would assign A through F grades to schools and school districts.

Jones Park and Nature Center invites the community to their annual Homestead Heritage Day, Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This free event is open to visitors of all ages, who will enjoy a variety of demonstrations, crafts and games, sample old-fashioned foods, and experience other 19th century activities.

The Kingwood High School boys’ basketball team split a pair of District 21-6A overtime games last week. The Mustangs won at home before falling on the road and with only three games remaining in the regular season, find themselves in second place in the league standings at 7-4.
