A floral arrangement designed by presenter Jan Kramer, master gardener.

Jan Kramer, Kingwood Garden Club member and expert floral arranger, recently presented a program on the creation of fresh floral design on a pedestal. The master gardener also arranged spectacular artistic patterns on candlesticks. Several designs were created and then given away as door prizes. Some of the fresh flowers used were tulips, Asiatic lilies, roses, spider mums, snapdragons and solidago. The attentive audience was intrigued by Kramer’s professional demonstrations.

The welcoming committee wore silver New Year headpieces as they greeted members and guests. These delightful women presented bright yellow kalanchoe pots, accented with beautiful glass butterflies, as door prizes.

Upcoming events are available for members, and the men and women of the Kingwood Garden Club encourage involvement in floral design, horticulture, gardening and learning. Educational excursions, workshops, grape harvesting and wine making in February; a plant sale in April as an outreach to the community; a “Spring Fling” luncheon in May; and a pilgrimage are a few of the many opportunities planned. A potting party, outreach to elementary schools, tours of Houston gardens and parks, and a “tips and tricks” to floral design are all planned in the spring. March 28 and 29 will include traveling to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, a Talk ‘n Walk tour, enjoying a guest speaker on “Landscaping” at Texas A & M, and attending the Benz School of Floral Design.

The refreshment table was laden with delicious treats and was decorated by Kathryn Kowalik and her mother Donna Kowalik. Their design included red roses, white hydrangeas, hypericum berries and gypsophilia. Although the community has suffered great loss because of the flood, the club continues to have confidence and hope in beautifying Kingwood. These two ladies offered encouragement by placing a lovely verse, a portion of “The Rose” by Bette Midler, near the arrangement.
