General Manager Katie Stowers and BootyBarre instructor Anoushka Miranda

Maintaining good health and fitness most certainly makes navigating life easier. Embody Fitness in Kingwood (located in the same plaza as Tularosa New Mexico Grill), offers multiple group fitness classes daily, as well as a plethora of cardio and weight training equipment to help area residents stay in shape. General Manager Katie Stowers said the club is always looking for new and inventive ways to keep members in shape. It offers a Kinesis wall and BootyBarre at the 13,000- square-foot gym.

BootyBarre is taught by trained ballet dancer and New Zealand native Anoushka Miranda. “The class is a combination of yoga, pilates and ballet, all done on a ballet barre. It’s strength training and toning with cardio elements. We focus on flexibility, stretching and good posture. The BootyBarre class is offered three times a week: Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. If people can be consistent and attend three classes a week, they will see results pretty quickly. It is a lot of toning and reshaping of the legs, glutes and core,” said Miranda.

Miranda has been training in ballet for most of her life. “I had my own dance studio in New Zealand for about ten years. When I found out about BootyBarre, I went and did the training. No experience in ballet is necessary to be successful in the class, though. Most of my clients have no ballet background,” added Miranda.

Several other group fitness classes are offered each day, including Cycling, Pedal Pump (interval training with weights), different types of Yoga, Weights & Rowers (indoor rowing with weight training), Zumba, Integrated Fusion, Bits & Pieces, HIIT, Cardio Bootcamp, Cardio Kickboxing, Cycling Voyage, Tubing, and Abs. Classes typically have between ten and 20 participants.

For those looking for something different, the free-standing Kinesis wall combines pilates and yoga together for 360-degree movement. The gym also has several personal trainers who are contracted to assist members under a fee-based arrangement.

Embody was founded almost 10 years ago in 2008. Stowers took over as general manager in 2010 and the gym recently changed ownership. Stowers said there is a strong sense of community among the staff and members at the gym. “Many of the team members have worked together since 1991, originally at Kingwood Athletic Club. The team goes to training at the Dallas Mania fitness conference each year and we come home and tweak our classes to incorporate what we learned. We are like a big family and we promote a friendly atmosphere at the club. It’s like “Cheers,” everyone knows your name,” said Stowers.

“We have had a lot of people join us from other clubs that suffered flooding (Orange Theory, the YMCA and the Kingwood Country Club) and what we have heard from so many of them is that Embody is so friendly, clean and a great place to socialize and work out. We have a lounge with free coffee and we have watched many new friendships develop there. Some members will work out and then relax for a bit and socialize. It’s been incredible and it helps people connect and hold each other accountable for getting to class,” said Stowers.

“We also have a holiday market coming up on Nov. 11. Many of our members have small businesses and our market is a way to showcase what they have to offer. We rent tables to members and non-members as well,” she said.

Joining Embody is easy. The monthly fee is $41.95 plus tax. There is no long-term contract, membership is month to month and cancellation only requires a 30-day notice. There is an enrollment fee as well. BootyBarre, Kinesis and Pilates are offered on a for-fee basis: five classes for $90 for members, and $100 for non-members.

Stowers said new members who would like to monitor their progress can take advantage of a free wellness profile after joining. “We do a lean body mass profile, talk about nutrition and go through a gym orientation. Members can come back every four weeks to repeat the wellness profile to see if what they are doing is working,” said Stowers.
