YMSL members listen to area professionals speak on career choices.

The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) of Kingwood held a career fair Feb. 16 with nine professionals from a wide variety of career fields and attended by over 60 of the league’s young men. The professionals present at the career meeting were: Vern Effernsen, airline pilot; Patrick Shanahan, chef; Bill Bey, commercial construction engineer; Jesse Thompson, Federal Reserve economist; Will Botsford from the Harris County Fire Department; Jason Devries from the Lonestar Fire Department CTE; Sgt. Tracey, military recruiter; Ferdinand Garcia, nurse; and Clint Wylie from Kingwood United Methodist Church student ministries.

“I liked the wide range of topics available at the career fair,” said Yvonne Edwards, YMSL Class of 2022, “and I learned there is a lot of flexibility when figuring out what you want to do in life.”

The young men were placed into groups of six or seven and spent about 10 interactive minutes with each speaker. The event was held at Arbor Terrace and included 22 freshmen, 20 sophomores, 14 juniors and six seniors.

“I was amazed by the deep level of interest these boys expressed as they met with each guest speaker,” said Trisha Ronk, who organized the event. “They asked great questions and were truly interested in hearing from each professional. Due to the enthusiastic response from the young men and our great speakers, I hope to make this an annual event for YMSL.”

The National YMSL started in 2001 to give boys an opportunity to be involved in their communities and philanthropy. Each boy and his mother are required to complete 20-30 service hours, 10-15 of which must be served together, giving mothers and sons bonding time while also enriching the lives of others within the community. The organization’s mission is to assist, serve and support those who are in need in the community, develop leadership skills among members and promote mother-son relationships.
