Local businesses throughout the area are trying to adapt to a very uncertain future amid the coronavirus crisis. Robin Martinez, owner of Flowers of Kingwood, remains optimistic.
“Currently, we are still delivering,” she said.
Martinez said they are taking orders and delivering to homes, leaving the flowers at the door and texting the customers from their driveways to let them know they were placed there. They are also offering curbside pickup, and she stressed that they are “taking diligent anti-virus precautions” in the store as well as on deliveries.
She said one of the biggest changes has been not taking their usual daily trips to schools as well as nursing homes.
“The hospitals have been kind enough to still let us deliver,” Martinez said.
When asked how others she knows in the business are coping, she said that those who do events exclusively are getting hit the hardest, some with large event orders losing up to a million dollars on those orders.
Martinez said she has a good supply chain and a close relationship with local wholesalers, so they are getting what they need to fulfill orders.
“Some of our standing orders from customers are being canceled,” she said.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Martinez and her employees are on hand each day, ready to work.
“My girls want to work,” she said.
She admitted she was nervous about cutting hours and trimming payroll.
“I don’t foresee letting anybody go, but we may not work for a while,” she said.
She said that it’s especially hard not knowing if proms and graduations, for which they have large orders under contract, will be canceled for certain or if some will still take place. School officials making those decisions are being faced with the same uncertainty.
Martinez said the hardest part is not knowing how long this will last. She said that with past disasters, such as hurricanes and floods, there was a reasonable idea about when business could be fully restored.
“We’ve weathered a lot since we started,” she said. “We’ve been here since 1987, but with this, we just don’t know where the end is.”
