For those who have resolved to learn something new and interesting in 2008, Kingwood College’s Academy for Lifelong Learning provides something for everyone. “We offer 30 to 40 classes every month,” said Pat Chandler, program manager for ALL. “We also have two trips per month. On one trip we take a Harris County Precinct 4 bus to an area of interest. The other trip is to visit areas of Houston via the METRO bus system.” All the courses are taught by volunteers. Some courses are taught by instructors from Kingwood College and others by experts in the field of interest. All courses are free unless consumable supplies are used for classes such as cooking, pottery or crafts. “Our history classes are a real hit, especially the ones taught by the college instructors. They are so popular we do not have enough seats,” said Chandler. “Our other most popular classes are the exercise classes. People who have never exercised in their lives are now seeing the results of their efforts.” “We rarely have to cancel classes due to lack of interest,” she added. Initially, ALL was held at Kingwood College, but it was soon apparent that the academy and the students needed a building separate and more accessible than the college. The East Montgomery Improvement District building was chosen as an ideal site for the academy. The building is easily accessed from U.S. Highway 59 and is handicapped accessible. “The yearly membership fee is $10. This year our advisory committee suggested we open the program to those 50 years old and older. Our statistics showed us that the baby boomer population is now 50 and we want to be accessible to them as well,” Chandler said. “We want everyone to attend.” ALL is in session nine months during the year; there are no classes in June, July or December. Classes for 2008 begin on Jan. 4. Make a resolution to learn something new this year. Sign-up now.
