Members of the community urged to help shop Kingwood’s Folk Sale

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on new books, buy used during the used book sale at the Kingwood Library. FOLK, Friends of the Library Kingwood, recognize the value of used books and would like to invite members of the community to their “Back to School” used book sale on Aug. 9. Prices range from 25 cents to $3 for most books, and gives avid readers a chance to catch up on their summer reading. The sale will have books covering several topics, including fiction, nonfiction and everything between. From hobbies to business, cooking to religion, parenting to humor, self-help to travel, the sale will encompass all types of books for avid readers and beginners alike. A major seller in previous years has been the children’s books. Whether buying for family, or restocking classrooms, the children’s book section will have something for readers of all ages. Every book the FOLK sale offers has been donated to the library by members of the community and proceeds from the sale go toward the library. “Every single nickel from the sale goes back to the library,” said Frances Pelham, of FOLK. Donations have been so abundant, members of FOLK are not able to keep inventory. “We cannot wait for the patrons to see the variety of books we have to offer,” said Pelham. FOLK volunteers, with the help of three volunteer groups - the Kingwood Womens Club, The National Charity League Kingwood Chapter, and The National Charity League Liveable Forest Chapter - help with donations and book sales. “The book sale would not be possible without their help,” said Pelham. “The atmosphere is fun,” said Nancy Casillo, of the NCL Kingwood Chapter. “We sort and trade suggestions on good books to read.” A preview of the sale will be held on Aug. 8 for FOLK members only at 5 p.m. If interested in becoming a FOLK member, patrons are encouraged to register at the preview sale. Registration is $15. The FOLK book sale will be open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Photo; A major seller at the book sale will be children’s books. Samuel, Sarah, and Joseph Mascardo enjoy picking out books for their own collection.
