Two students from Lone Star College-Kingwood received the recognition of Top Honor in a national logo design competition. The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) held the logo design competition for graphic design students at two and four-year colleges. LSC-Kingwood was the only two-year college with two students honored. Angel Diaz and Jessica McCartney, from Professor Karsan Hirani’s Illustrator class, were happy to hear they had won top honors among so many participants. Diaz, a video game design student, says the class was inspired by the cash prize, but they owe their great work to Professor Hirani. “If not for Professor Hirani teaching us everything he knew, we wouldn’t have gone to top honors. He’s a great teacher.” Professor Hirani says he always assigns a logo design project as part of the curriculum. He was excited to learn about this opportunity to give his students some real world experience. He says Jessica was particularly enthusiastic, producing not one design, but four. “I see my role, in any kind of design project that I give to my students, as that of facilitator because design is something in which everyone has their own style, “says Professor Hirani. Professor Hirani brings a wealth of experience to his students. He worked as an architect and a city planner for 15 years before becoming a professor. He says he always felt drawn to teaching and now he loves it. ICPF held their national logo design competition to introduce students to graphic design career opportunities in the corrugated packaging and design industry. Entries were judged on style, cutting- edge appeal, adaptive use for ICPF, and the statement the logo makes to the higher education community and to the green/sustainable, corrugated industry. First through fifth place winners received cash prizes. At LSC-Kingwood, individuals may pursue an AAS degree in visual communication or choose from several certificate programs, including graphic design, motion graphics, video and post-production, multimedia design, 3-D animation and Web design.
