Adults age 50 and older who are seeking new friends and new interests are invited to join Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL). The program offers a multitude of free and low-cost classes and events for retired, semi-retired and working seniors.
“The ALL program offers non-credit courses, lectures and social activities for continued intellectual and personal growth. The curriculum offers a range of instruction that will capture the interests of all members,” said Pat Chandler, LSC-Kingwood continuing education director and system program manager for ALL.
Potential members can learn more about the program at an open house Jan. 29 from 1-3 p.m. at the East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) in New Caney. This event will cover a wide range of topics, including enrollment, membership dues, upcoming classes, field trips and more. EMCID is located at 21575 U.S. Hwy. 59 N.
“The ALL program is a great avenue for seniors to mingle with other people, discuss similar problems, and keep their minds active,” said Helen Michelini, an ALL member since 2007.
“I have made life-long friends since day one, and this organization will help seniors get out of the house and stay active.”
In February, ALL will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The program started with 71 members and six courses. Now there are more than 100 classes offered each semester and approximately 800 members. All courses are free and taught by volunteers.
This spring, ALL will offer a multitude of classes covering a wide variety of interests such as arts and crafts, gardening skills, photography techniques, health and wellness, technology, genealogy, yoga, literary discussion groups, and many more. Classes are short-term and non-credit and can last from a few hours to several weeks.
In addition to the many courses and programs offered, members also take monthly field trips to a variety of attractions in Houston and out-of-town destinations.
The annual membership for ALL is $20 from Sept. 1-Aug. 31. Although courses are free, some may require a small event fee, supply or entrance fee. There are no educational requirements.
