As the big shiny bus pulls into the parking lot and comes to a stop at the Humble Activity Center, people who have been quietly sitting in their cars or standing in groups immediately make their way toward bus. It is one of the Precinct 4 buses dedicated to the Senior Adult Program. More than 20 seniors were on their way to Mrs. Baird’s Bakery for a tour of the bakery and to sample their delicious baked goods. “Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry Eversole is committed to providing special services to the senior citizens of the precinct,” said Jan Allison, director of the Senior Adult Program. The senior program services include educational and recreational day trips, special events, Community Center classes, programs and activities, within a 150-mile radius from Houston. To reserve the bus, organized senior adult groups must be 50 years of age or older. There are exceptions for group coordinators, caretakers and sometimes special guests. Requests for exceptions are coordinated through the Precinct 4 offices. The buses are free of charge, but, passengers do provide the driver with meals, entrance and parking fees. “We have more than 250 senior groups utilize the buses every year. Group leaders have to plan far in advance for their trips in order to be able to reserve a bus. The Precinct 4 buses are very popular. We rarely have a cancellation,” Allison said. “It is recommended that groups make reservations at least 90 to 120 days in advance. Due to their popularity, we cannot accept reservations with less than 30 days notice.” Requests for the precinct buses are limited with few exceptions. “We use the bus 10 times a year,” said the group director from the Humble Activity Center. “Our group really looks forward to these events.” Groups often donate to the Senior Adult Program. Through SAFE (Senior Adults’ Fun Events), a nonprofit 501(c) (3) fund, donations can be accepted. The money is used to promote activities for Precinct 4 senior adults. Without generous donations from various groups, programs such as birding field trips, tickets to the Astros ball games, Houston Livestock Show, and Rodeo and Sunday Afternoon in the Park, etc. would not be possible.
