New requirements regarding travel by air
- Written by Bonnie McKeena
The confusion regarding the need for passports is still raging and, once again, the time from application to receipt of the passport has been lengthened. On Jan. 23, 2008, passengers arriving into the United States by air from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean are now required to present a passport. The U.S. State Department Web site is telling Americans to apply at least 12 weeks prior to planning to travel. The department reports that approximately 50 percent of new applicants are paying $60 additional for an expedited passport. Expedited applications take two to three weeks.
