This Tuesday, Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey will be asking Commissioners Court members to approve the creation of the first-ever Harris County Safe School Commission.
“We have to make sure we’re targeting all aspects of school safety, not just one particular element,” said Commissioner Ramsey. “If you speak with the experts, they will tell you there is not one single solution that will prevent this from happening again. That is why I'm proposing an immediate focus by this Commission to do all that we can so we don't have to experience another Santa Fe or Uvalde. I know we have to act now before the next school year begins. The first step is to gather experts for the Commission and listen to their recommendations. Sending our children and teachers to a safe and secure environment each day has to be our priority.
While many are calling for ‘action’ - and rightly so - this is something we can do right here, right now in Harris County that will make a difference. There are many ideas from many voices that may or may not come to fruition but this is one thing we can all agree on - the safety and protection of our children and schools,” said Commissioner Ramsey. There is no reason why this shouldn't be a unanimous vote on Tuesday and I look forward to having the support of my colleagues on the Court.”
Commissioner Ramsey hopes his agenda item will spark a constructive, in-depth discussion on an informed local approach that results in tangible, effective, and proven solutions. His court agenda item states:
“Request by the Commissioner of Precinct 3 for discussion and possible action on the creation of the Harris County Safe School Commission.”
“My initial thoughts are that this Commission will include members of law enforcement, school superintendents, and community leaders, but of course all of this is open for discussion. I look forward to the Court’s constructive input for this initiative,” said Commissioner Ramsey.
The Harris County Safe School Commission is just one of the many ways Commissioner Ramsey’s office is working to create safer schools and neighborhoods. Other initiatives include partnering with local law enforcement to host trainings for civilians and advanced trainings for officers in active shooter situations. Commissioner Ramsey is also working with local school districts, community members, and stakeholders to bring forth more ideas and solutions to Commissioners Court.
Commissioners Court will take place this Tuesday, June 14th beginning at 10 AM. For more information on agenda items or to watch it live, visit: agenda.harriscountytx.gov/.
