Out of 1,200 school districts statewide, Humble ISD was among the top 2% honored with the inaugural District of Distinction Award at the Texas Art Education Association’s (TAEA) awards ceremony at Moody Gardens in Galveston. Humble ISD received the honor for providing a well-rounded education that advocates and integrates visual arts curriculum to inspire creativity and reach all different learners.

“This award is a great reflection of the hard work our staff and students contribute to Humble ISD’s fine arts program,” Houston Hayes, Humble ISD director of fine arts said.  “It’s a fitting honor for our district.”

TAEA is a top advocate for visual arts in the state. The organization has previously honored outstanding TAEA members for work in their classrooms and districts. This is the first year that TAEA is honoring districts that meet rigorous criteria as evidenced from data.

“It is an honor to be recognized for the excellent visual art education program and department we have developed in Humble ISD,” Stacia Gower, Humble ISD visual art coordinator said. “This award is acknowledgment of the dedication and work of our art educators and their incredible student artists.”

For the 2019 award, each district submitted documentation that they had met the requirements over the 2018-2019 school year.

“Humble ISD has set the standard for visual arts advocacy, integrated visual arts curriculum and creativity,” Dr. Michaelann Kelley, president-elect of TAEA said. “This is a high honor. The award is a testament to the skill, perseverance and vision for a well-rounded education for this winning school district.”

Additionally, Gower was awarded the Supervision/Administration Art Educator of the Year Award by the Texas Art Education Association. The award recognizes significant contributions to art education on the state, local and national level.
