Kingwood Medical Center and Dr. Julie Bernell helped Sofia Sisneros and Samuel Cruz welcome their daughter into the world at 12:16 a.m. on January 1, 2015. Baby Mikeila Virginia Cruz Sisneros weighed 2 pounds and 8 ounces and is 11.5 inches long. Baby Mikeila was delivered 10 weeks prematurely and is receiving specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Women & Children’s Center.
Mrs. Sisneros said, “Around 7:00 p.m. on December 31st, I began feeling pains on the top of my belly and when my face became swollen, I realized something was wrong and my husband brought me to the hospital. When I arrived to the hospital, my blood pressure was very high; I had preeclampsia.”
Mr. Cruz said, “I was very nervous when the doctor said we had to do the C-section. The hospital staff explained the entire process, every detail, and answered all our questions, which relieved some of our anxiety. Dr. Bernell performed an emergency C-section to save our baby. Dr. Bernell was very nice and made us feel comfortable in knowing our baby is in good hands.”
Mrs. Sisneros said, “We were extremely surprised when we learned Mikeila was the first baby born on New Year’s Day. I am so thankful Mikeila is alive and fighting for her life. We are praying to God and know he is taking care of everything. We feel extremely blessed to have our baby with us and in stable condition in the NICU.”
“Baby Mikeila will remain in the NICU for ten to twelve weeks, until she reaches our original due date of March 15,” Mrs. Sisneros said
The couple has lived in Porter, Texas, for over 12 years and this was their first time visiting Kingwood Medical Center. Sofia Sisneros is 31 years old and was born in Guatemala. Her husband Samuel Cruz is from El Salvador. They had planned to take childbirth preparation classes next month and tour The Women and Children’s Center. She says they still plan to attend the classes and take the infant safety and CPR.
“Our team delivered more than 2,800 babies last year and we are committed to providing the best possible care for each mother, baby and family.
