Police are investigating a murder-suicide that happened after a double date.

A double date with two Huffman couples ended in a tragic murder-suicide Sunday, June 30. Harris County Sheriff's deputies were called at about 3:15 a.m. to a home in the 3600 block of Kennington for a shooting.

Deputies found 27-year-old Austin Smith shot to death in the driveway when they arrived at the home. Investigators said Smith and his girlfriend had gone mudding with Colby Rigsby and his girlfriend on Saturday evening.

The two couples returned to Rigsby's home and witnesses said Rigsby and his girlfriend began arguing. Witnesses told investigators that Smith intervened between Rigsby and his girlfriend and the two men began fighting in front of the home. Investigators said Rigsby went inside his home to get a gun, so Rigsby's girlfriend, Smith and his girlfriend all left the home. Smith returned later to pick up his four-wheeler and was loading it onto a trailer when he was confronted by Rigsby, who allegedly shot and killed Smith in front of the home.

Deputies went to the home to arrest Rigsby and heard a gunshot inside. When deputies went into the home, they found Rigsby dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with more information on the murder-suicide is asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100.
