Q: What plants will be available this year at the annual March Mart plant sale?
A: March Mart, hosted by Mercer Botanic Gardens and The Mercer Society, is one of the most anticipated spring plant sales in the Texas Gulf Coast region. The annual plant sale features tax-free shopping for pollinator-friendly Texas natives, hard-to-find varieties, tropical gingers grown on site, and much more!
A new addition to March Mart is the purple ghost Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). The purple ghost has intense red-purple leaves with black veins in the spring and new leaves almost seem to glow before they age to red in the summer. In the autumn, the leaves turn to a dramatic red-orange. This spectacular tree is ideal for smaller spaces, maturing at 10-15 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide. The purple ghost is hardy to Zone 9 and grows well in our warm climate.
This year’s March Mart plant sale also features fuzzy Bolivian sage (Salvia oxyphora), grown on site at Mercer Botanic Gardens. It is a stunning, sun-loving, back-of-the-border salvia with big, bold, fuzzy fuchsia blooms and is often covered with butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
March Mart is also a great place to find garden classics like magnolias, red buds and dogwoods; vegetables and herbs; and flowering shrubs like hydrangea, altheas, azaleas and more.
Get ready for spring planting at March Mart on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at Mercer Botanic Gardens in Humble!
