Community event coming to Humble Civic Center In keeping with the early American, old-fashioned barn raising, the Humble Area Assistance Ministries is holding its own event to raise funds for programs and parking. “Raise the Roof for HAAM” is a Community Interfaith Concert set for Feb. 25 at the Humble Civic Center from noon to 5 p.m. "On any given day from 10 to 2, you can barely drive past here," said HAAM Director Diana Garbis. The parking lot at HAAM is usually filled to beyond capacity, with many seeking parking along the street and others left circling and waiting. The growing population in the area has caused much growth in the school district, explained Garbis, and that growth has been just as steady at HAAM. Last year, the ministries fed 11,241 families and provided nearly 40,000 services to those in need. In order to keep pace with the need, HAAM needs to add some much-needed space, both for parking and building space, to accomodate new programs. The community is invited to help by particpating in a chili cookoff and enjoying music from talent including Fishers of Men, contemporary Christian rock band; Michell Reed, local Christian jazz soloist; the St. Martha Catholic Church choir; the children’s choir from Hidden Hollow Elementary; 242, praise and worship band from Christ The King Lutheran Church; Atascocita Methodist Church's praise team; and Six Ways from Sunday, a contemporary praise band. Five hours of nonstop music will entertain attendees, and there will also be a silent auction offering a tour of golf courses, dinners from several restaurants, and some surprise items will be up for bid. The effort will also offer face painting and other children's entertainment. KHOU's Giff Neilson, Houston Oilers' quarterback Dan Pastorini, Houston City Councilwoman Addie Wiseman, Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo, Humble Police Chief Gary Warman, and Tribune owner and editor Cynthia Calvert will serve as judges at the chili cookoff. Garbis joked that they would have TUMS in tow. Tickets will be available at the door and will be $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, call 281-446-3663 or visit
