Out and About...

Welcome back to Out and About … where you can find out what’s happening in our community. Many thanks to my dear friend Diane Blanco for keeping you entertained, informed and delighted with excerpts from her Lipstick Digest blog over the last few weeks. Never one to rest on her laurels or her lipstick, Diane recently jetted away to New York to attend a “BlogHer” convention. Just as it sounds, it was a convention for women who write blogs – so stay tuned for more from Diane! “Baby, oh baby” – those words went through my mind as I toured comfortable, homey Harkins House in Humble, home for expectant mothers. The walls are filled with pictures of dozens of precious little ones whose lives have been saved as a result of the amazing ministry of Shirley Harkins and her late husband Bob, “BJ.” And of course, those babies are just part of a beautiful story of how lives are saved and changed through the programs and services provided there. Later that evening the incomparable Chez Nous Restaurant was filled to capacity for an elegant dinner celebrating and benefitting Harkins House. Among those enjoying the five-star dining experience provided by Scott and Stacy Simonson and their team: Harkins House Board members and spouses Stan and Leesa Love, Mike and Wendy Alexander; Hank and Marilyn Marion, and Dennis Young; Jay and Sally Mincks; Joe and Corinn Price; Roger and Anne Schuelke; Jeff and Laurie Hiett; Tom and Robin Cassell; Ben and Carol Trammell; Dr. Amy Plummer; Dr. Noel Boyd; Ron and Halene Crossman; Richard and Len Leofsky; Rob and Jessica Nielsen; Carleton and Hazel Cole. Special guests were some former residents and their children. For more information, visit www.harkinshouse.org. Judging from the parking lot, you might have assumed that there was an epidemic of bad backs in Kingwood, but not so! Chiropractor Dr. Charlie Campbell and beautiful wife Kyle hosted a “Chilean Chill Out” for House of Representatives District 127 Candidate Dan Huberty at Charlie’s office. Sharing in the hostess duties were Cheryl “CJ” Johnson and Cherrie Ledoux. Faces in the crowd included gorgeous Janet Huberty; Councilman Mike Sullivan; Dr. Scott and Heather Pagano; Drs. Ed Fritsch, Dawn Schwabbe, Betsy Robinson and Ed Kieke; Milan and Julie Saunders; Jim and Barbara Williamson; Roddy McAlpine; Norman and Marsha Weiss; Kevin Ilges; Steve King; Bill and Sandy Hendrix; Paula Bordelon; Gina Remmes; Gregg and Terry Mielke; Anne Wallace; Jim and Diane Harding. Where were you 25 years ago? Young Tony Raffa had just opened Amedeo’s on Loop 494. Last month’s anniversary celebration was more than Tony could have ever imagined¯a full house, with more than 200 reservations, and standing room only! Tony and staff were dressed as their persona from 25 years ago, and handsome young Logan Raffa took us all by surprise with his exact resemblance of Tony walking through the restaurant. No celebration would be complete without our favorite deejay Mark Linabury, who not only played all the great old music, but also challenged us with trivia questions from 1985. Faces in the huge crowd included Mike and Sandy Badura; Joe and Tracy Stunja; Ed and Sara Nowak; Robert and Nancy Dillard; Ted and Diana Price; Danny and Geralyn Sullivan; and a table of friends who were there together on opening night, 1985: Rod and Eunice Dennis; Don and Janet Harbour; Bill and Jerry Morgan; Mike and Annette Keady; Alice Pope. New owners of Dirt Road Divas, Tony and Jodie Robinson, recently hosted a wonderfully fun evening of food, wine and fashion in their delightful boutique. Who could pass up those bargains? Certainly not any of these savvy shoppers: Chris Parker; Eileen Booher; Ginger Bertrand; Brenda Miller; Pat Guard; Theresa Harper; and some lucky ladies arriving in a long white limo! Don’t miss the free “Concert Carnival at Town Center”, Saturday, Aug. 14, from 5 – 9 p.m., sponsored by Kingwood United Methodist Church Youth Department. There will be many fun activities, food to purchase, plenty of water, local bands, and a special performance by the Robby Seay Band, beginning at 7:45. Seen out and about: Dining on the patio at Zammitti’s: Jamey and Carol Smith; Skip and Vivian Curry; Ron and Tina Denoville. Celebrating birthdays and lunching at Amedeos: Rene Johnson and Betty Dudley with friends Danielle Graham, Ilona Chase, Susan Powell, Irmgard Davis, and Rita Schenck. Enjoying a fabulous wine dinner at Hasta La Pasta: Carl and Colene Joiner; Jim and Diana Rutherford. Anniversary congratulations to Jim and Barbara Williamson on their 58th; Kendall and Roxie Shirley on their 46th; Guy and Diane Sconzo on their 36th; Tony and Leslie Raffa on their 17th; Jodie and Valerie Copley on their 10th; and Andy and Beth Duncan on their 10th. I’ll see you out and about!
